The Mikado Review 1994
This excellent traditional production by Brian Lawson had all the comedy and encores on which G. & S. purists thrive. Costumes were colourful and all lady members of the cast wore the Japanese wigs and flowers. I particularly liked the swaying walk of the gentlemen in the opening chorus and their fan work was absolutely on the beat. Nick Whalley’s Nanki Poo was both well sung and performed. Eddie Smith as Pooh Bah gave a masterly pompous performance aided by Martin Taylor as Pish Tush. Philip May as Ko Ko was brilliant. He played to his audience superbly and his singing of Tit Willow was excellently tongue-in-cheek.
Carole Slater’s Yum Yum was pleasant. She has a lovely singing voice and acted well. She was superbly supported by Sharon Morris as a delightful Pitti Sing and Jackie Doherty as Peep Bo. Jean Unsworth made a majestic entrance as Katisha and continued to give a breathtaking performance as the jilted, elderly, court lady. David Kellie was a most impressive Mikado.
The dimming of lights during asides to the audience added to the artistry of the production.
Colourful costumes from North Manchester AODS enhanced the spectacular set made by Mr J. Bothamly and Mrs S. Horrocks.
The enthusiastic playing of the orchestra under the direction of Mr. R. White finished off an enjoyable evening’s entertainment. Well done!
